Probing Cases Over July Uprising to Get Utmost Importance: DMP Chief

Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali today emphasized that investigations into the cases related to the July-August anti-discrimination student-people uprising will be prioritized. “Cases filed in connection with the anti-discrimination movement will be investigated with the highest priority,” he stated during the monthly crime review meeting held at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium at Rajarbagh.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the DMP chief announced the nationwide joint forces’ ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ to apprehend individuals involved in various crimes. These crimes include enforced disappearances, looting, extortion, and killings, associated with the student-people movement in July-August and extending over the last 15 years.

Commissioner Sazzat Ali urged police officers under the DMP to demonstrate sincerity and professionalism in maintaining law and order within Dhaka. He highlighted the need for increased efforts to arrest robbers and extortionists and for DMP police stations and outposts to adopt a more proactive role.

The DMP chief also called for advancements in case investigations and emphasized increasing the rate of case disposal, along with intensified efforts in drug recovery and executing warrants. He identified traffic congestion as a significant issue in Dhaka, noting the obstruction caused by public and private organizations using roadblocks to press their demands, which he stated must cease.

Furthermore, the DMP chief provided directives to the Traffic Division to address the issue of vehicle overspeeding. Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Sarwar and Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S. N. Md. Nazrul Islam contributed to the discussions at the meeting.

Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Md. Faruk Hossain presented a report on the overall crime situation for January 2025. The meeting was attended by Joint Police Commissioners, Deputy Police Commissioners, Officers-in-Charge of all DMP police stations, and police officers of various ranks.
