Davos: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called on global leaders to leverage the transformative power of sports to effect social change. He made this appeal during a plenary session titled “The State of Climate and Nature,” held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s annual summit in Davos, Switzerland.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Yunus emphasized that sports should transcend its role as mere entertainment, highlighting its significant potential to influence society positively. Drawing from his experience with the Paris 2024 Olympics, he shared how he was invited in 2018 to integrate social issues into the event, to which he promptly agreed, asserting, “Yes, of course, we can do that.”
Prof Yunus also noted that Milan has requested his assistance in organizing the Winter Olympics in 2026 to ensure it incorporates social dimensions. He remarked, “… there are many things right in front of us. We never try it in a different way. We are not sacrificing anything; we are adding something to it.”
The session was attended by Lamiya Morshed, SDG Coordinator of the Bangladesh government, and Shafiqul Alam, the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary.
