Kathmandu: National Assembly (NA) member Bishnu Kumari Sapkota has emphasized the need for reserving proportional electoral constituencies for women to ensure their robust representation in the parliament. She articulated this demand, highlighting its importance in reinforcing the political presence of women in the legislative framework.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Sapkota stressed that while the electoral system has become costly and requires amendments, the proportional electoral system enshrined in the Constitution must remain intact. She credited this system with enabling women, as well as Madhesi, Dalit, and indigenous nationalities, to secure positions in the parliament.
Sapkota, who has consistently championed women’s rights within the National Assembly, underscored that empowering women to assume leadership roles is crucial to eliminating violence against women. She also highlighted the importance of effectively implementing constitutional provisions to address the country’s myriad issues, while also calling for amendments to the constitution to enhance political stability.
The lawmaker firmly stated that any constitutional amendments should not undermine women’s rights. Furthermore, she urged the government to adopt a firm stance on ensuring good governance, emphasizing the need for honesty among bureaucrats and political leaders.
Sapkota also proposed strengthening local governments to bolster the federal system, suggesting that the existing number of local governments could be reduced through a merger process to enhance efficiency and governance.
