Kathmandu: Lawmakers have recently voiced concerns over the government’s perceived weak performance, which they argue is responsible for the resurgence of pro-monarchy sentiments. During a House of Representatives (HoR) meeting, opposition leaders emphasized the need for unification among republican forces to safeguard the constitution and the federal democratic republic system.
According to National News Agency Nepal, several lawmakers attributed the government’s ineffectiveness on key issues as the primary cause behind the growing pro-monarchy voices. Rajendra Prasad Pandey of CPN (Unified Socialist) highlighted that the federal democratic republic was achieved through citizens’ struggles, not as a gift from any individual. However, he acknowledged that public frustration is increasing due to poor governance, institutional corruption, and bureaucratic red-tapism.
Ranju Kumari Jha of the Janata Samajwadi Party called for all democratic forces to come together to protect the constitution, emphasizing that the republican constitution was established through the people’s mandate. Meanwhile, Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party criticized the government’s performance, asserting that it has been inadequate.
Gokarna Bista, a CPN (UML) lawmaker, argued that democracy is essential for strengthening people’s freedom and dismissed the attempts to reinstate the monarchy as irrelevant. He warned that such efforts could lead to anarchy and instability, which are unacceptable to democratic forces.
Additionally, Raj Kishor Yadav suggested a shift in working style to implement democracy effectively at the grassroots level. He urged political parties to address their shortcomings and collaborate to move forward, emphasizing the importance of adapting to ensure the success of the democratic system.
