Kathmandu: Chairperson of Maiti Nepal, Anuradha Koirala, has raised concerns over the increasing incidents of violence against women in the entertainment sector. Speaking at the concluding session of the ‘Women Film Festival’ held in the federal capital on Thursday, Koirala highlighted that most women working in areas such as pubs, lounges, dance bars, and dance clubs in Kathmandu are girls under the age of 20.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Chairperson Koirala emphasized the prevalence of violence in these venues, which often recruit young girls. She also expressed worry about reports of substance abuse among these girls. Koirala stressed the importance of addressing these issues and pointed out that despite discussions with relevant authorities, including Kathmandu Metropolis, no significant progress has been made. She called for increased public awareness and the role of films in combating violence against women.
During the event, Chairperson of the Film Development Board, Dinesh DC, noted that the Board organized the ‘Women Film Festival’ to amplify women’s voices and foster an environment conducive to women’s empowerment. He underscored the festival’s role in shedding light on women’s issues and fostering collaborative efforts to address them, hoping that films would have a positive impact in achieving these goals.
In recognition of their contributions, women actors, artists, and directors were awarded during the festival.
