Road Safety Law to Be Enacted in Bangladesh by 2027: Adilur


Marrakesh: Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan today announced that the government has initiated efforts to enact a road safety law by 2027.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Adilur, who also serves as an adviser to the Ministry of Industries, made this statement on Wednesday night during the Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Marrakesh, Morocco, from February 18-20. The announcement was included in a press release issued today.



The press release further outlined Bangladesh’s commitment to improving road safety, highlighting the National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan. This plan targets a 50 percent reduction in road accident fatalities by 2030.



Additionally, the release detailed plans for the development of a central information-based database system by 2026. This system will be tasked with collecting, storing, and analyzing data related to road accidents.



A speed control management guideline is also set to be formulated by 2026, ensuring the enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Speed Limit Guidelines of 2024. Furthermore, a guideline for the use of standard helmets is slated for development and implementation by 2026.



The conference saw participation from key figures including Dr. Mohammad Ziaul Haque, Additional Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division; Syed Moinul Hasan, Chief Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department; Nazneen Hossain, Director of the Enforcement Department of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority; Taifur Rahman, Global Road Safety Advocacy and Grants Program Manager; Dr. Shariful Alam, Country Coordinator of the Global Health Advocacy Incubator; Ilias Kanchan, Founder and Chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai; Khalid Mahmud, BRAC Road Safety Program Manager; and Dr. Selim Mahmud Chowdhury from the CIPRB.
