Chattogram: The 89th birth anniversary of the architect of multi-party democracy and founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, was celebrated today in a befitting manner. The programmes included rallies, placing of wreaths at the portrait of Ziaur Rahman at his first grave at Zianagar and the city’s Biplopuddayan, cultural functions, discussions, winter clothes distribution, and other initiatives.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, different political parties, including BNP and its front organizations, along with socio-cultural bodies, arranged colourful programmes to mark the day. City Mayor Dr. Shahdat Hossain, BNP Vice Chairman and former Minister Abdullah Al Noman, BNP central leaders Mahbubur Rahman Shamim, Golam Akbar Khondoker, City BNP President Earshadullah, and leaders of different cultural organizations placed wreaths at the portrait of Ziaur Rahman at the city’s Biplopuddayan.
Separate discussion meetings focusing on the life and works of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman were held in various areas, including Biplopuddayan maidan, this afternoon. The discussions were attended by City Mayor Dr. Shahdat Hossain, BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, BNP central leaders, and activists, who provided insights into Ziaur Rahman’s contributions.
Another discussion meeting took place at the Hathazari Bus Stand area. Earlier, the Chattogram city BNP paid tributes to the architect of multi-party democracy by visiting his first grave at Zia Nagar, Rangunia upazila. Leading the function were City BNP President Earshadullah and General Secretary Nazimur Rahman.
In addition, Chattogram North and South District units of BNP organized separate Khatme Quran recitations and discussion meetings. Educational institutions, including Chattogram University, Chattogram Medical College, and others, also held discussions on Ziaur Rahman’s life and achievements.
To commemorate the day, the party flag was hoisted atop the party’s Kazir Dweuri office and other party offices in different upazilas of the district, with winter clothes distributed to the poor across different upazilas.
