Social Media Platforms Must Comply with Nepalese Law, Says PM Oli


Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized the necessity for all social media platforms operating in Nepal to adhere to the country’s legal framework. Speaking at the opening of the ‘Digital Nepal Conclave 2025,’ organized by the ICT Foundation, Prime Minister Oli highlighted the importance of these platforms registering according to Nepal’s existing laws, paying taxes, and meeting other legal obligations.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Prime Minister Oli stressed the government’s responsibility to be informed about all transactions related to information technology within the country. He reiterated the need for social media platforms to comply with legal requirements, including tax payments. The Prime Minister also spoke about the government’s initiatives to promote information technology, which he believes can facilitate income generation both domestically and internationally.



The Prime Minister shared his observations from a recent visit to the Pushpalal Mid-Hill highway, where he noted that even elderly residents in remote villages, such as those in Rukum, are utilizing platforms like Facebook. He asserted that Nepal is an ideal location for the advancement of digital technology and green energy, urging the full utilization of artificial intelligence to drive development and prosperity. The government, he mentioned, has recently introduced an AI policy to support these objectives.



Highlighting the impact of technology on education, Prime Minister Oli noted that over 150,000 students from the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) have benefited from online education since last year, pursuant to government announcements. He underscored the importance of leveraging information technology in educational and developmental contexts while safeguarding children from the negative effects of mobile phone usage.



Prime Minister Oli concluded by affirming the government’s commitment to using information technology to foster stability, good governance, and development, with active participation from the private sector. He expressed confidence that technology could play a pivotal role in preventing corruption and enhancing human conduct.
