Sushila Karki Sworn In as Interim Prime Minister of Nepal

Kathmandu: President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly-appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki as per the Constitution. Karki was sworn in as the Prime Minister at the Office of the President in Sheetal Niwas. The interim government led by Karki has been tasked with conducting the general elections in six months. The special ceremony was attended by Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut, foreign ambassadors to Nepal, Karki’s spouse Durga Prasad Subedi, former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, Chief Secretary of Nepal government Eaknarayan Aryal, and other high-level government officials.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Karki has made history in Nepal’s political landscape as the first woman to become Prime Minister, having previously served as the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal from July 11, 2016, to June 9, 2017. She is recognized for her strong advocacy for good governance, a cause she continued to champion even after her retirement. Her appointment is expected to resonate with the younger generation, particularly GenZ, who have been vocal in their support for her leadership.

Karki’s previous tenure as Chief Justice is noted for her bold decisions and assertive stance on various legal matters. With her new role as Prime Minister, there is anticipation that she will address GenZ’s demands, foster good governance, and navigate the nation through its current political challenges.
