Taskforce Formed to Apprehend Fugitive Prisoners Across the Country

Kathmandu: The Department of Prison Management has urged prisoners who escaped from various jails across the country during the Gen Z protests on September 8-9 to return to custody by October 6. Efforts are being made to bring the fugitives back with the support of the Ministry of Home Affairs, security agencies, and other stakeholders. The department has also clarified the formation of a ‘Fugitive Prisoner Search and Arrest Taskforce’.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Director and spokesperson Chomendra Neupane stated that a significant number of prisoners remain at large. Legal action will be pursued against those who do not return within the stipulated timeframe as per existing law. The department has called upon the concerned parties to provide information regarding the escaped prisoners following last Friday’s Home Minister-level decision.

Legal proceedings will also be initiated against individuals who are found to be hiding or sheltering prisoners in fugitive status. Additionally, updated details of prisoners who have not yet returned are to be regularly gathered from districts and forwarded to the relevant higher authorities.
