UGC Delegation Evaluates Private Universities in Sylhet to Enhance Educational Standards


Sylhet: A four-member delegation from the University Grants Commission (UGC) has conducted inspections at three private universities in Sylhet to improve the quality of education and academic operations. The universities visited include North East University Bangladesh, RTM Al Kabir Technical University, and Leading University.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the UGC delegation’s on-site inspections focused on a range of issues pertaining to higher education, including university management and the enhancement of educational quality. They emphasized the importance of conducting educational activities on permanent campuses in compliance with the Private Universities Act, 2010. The delegation was led by Professor Dr. Mohammad Anwar Hossain, the in-charge member of the UGC’s Private Universities Management Department.



The delegation’s other members included Dr. Md Sultan Mahmud Bhuiyan, Director of the Private Universities Management Department; Md Mamunur Rashid Khan, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Chairman’s Office; and Sheikh Al Amin, Assistant Director of the Private Universities Management Department. Their inspection covered the land allocated for both temporary and permanent campuses, as well as checking the permission periods and extensions.



During their visits, the delegation assessed classrooms, laboratories, and other physical infrastructures. Professor Anwar Hossain highlighted the importance of ensuring that these institutions operate in alignment with the Private Universities Act, 2010, and also inquired into academic, administrative, and financial practices to ensure compliance with relevant rules and regulations.



The delegation urged university authorities to focus on enhancing educational quality, boosting budget allocations for research, publishing research articles in internationally recognized journals, organizing regular convocations, and conducting all educational activities on permanent campuses. Meetings were held with key university officials, including North East University Bangladesh Vice Chancellor (Acting) Professor Dr. Ranjit Kumar, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Professor Dr. Shahriar Hossain Chowdhury, RTM Al Kabir Technical University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Naser Zafarullah, Treasurer Professor Momtaz Shamim, and Leading University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Taj Uddin Ahmed, to exchange views and recommendations.
