UNHCR and EU Delegation Conducts Onsite Visits to Bhutanese Refugee Camps


Damak: A team comprising high-ranking officials from the UNHCR and European Union has conducted onsite visits to Bhutanese refugee camps in the eastern region. The visit aimed to assess the condition of the refugees residing in these camps.



According to National News Agency Nepal, the delegation visited the Bhutanese refugee camps located in Beldangi of Damak and Pathari Shanischare camp of Morang. The team included the Ambassador of EU to Nepal, Veronique Lorenzo, UNHCR Representative to Nepal, Monique Sokhan, Senior Officer of UNHCR Nepal, Sangita Khatiwada, country coordinator Bijay Bajracharya, and a representative from LWF, among others.



The team conducted an onsite visit of the Pathari Shanischare-based Bhutanese refugee camp on Monday, followed by a visit to the Beldangi camp in Damak on Wednesday. During these visits, they engaged with the refugees to understand their current situation and challenges.



Additionally, an interaction session was held at Damak municipality, where the Mayor of Damak, Ram Kumat Thapa, and Deputy-Mayor Regina Bhattarai Prasai shared their views regarding the Bhutanese refugees living at the Beldangi camp. They discussed the various challenges faced by the municipality due to the presence of the refugee population and explored potential solutions to address these issues.
