Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has announced that social media platforms that have not been registered by today will be deactivated in Nepal. Minister Gurung addressed journalists at his Ministry, revealing that he has instructed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to proceed with the deactivation of unlisted social media platforms.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Supreme Court had previously mandated the Government to ensure the registration of both domestic and foreign online and social media platforms with the appropriate authorities before they could operate within the country. In response to this directive, the Council of Ministers urged interested individuals, companies, or organizations to register their social media platforms in Nepal.
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, adhering to the Directives to manage the use of social media, 2080, had called for applications for platform listing within seven days. The required format for registration was specified in Schedule 1 of these directives. Minister Gurung emphasized that platforms failing to meet the registration deadline would face deactivation, with the possibility of reactivation upon successful listing. “We had asked them to register within seven days, the deadline was until today, we will deactivate the social media platforms from today itself,” he stated.
