Young Generation Aims for Merit-Based Bureaucracy: Nahid

Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Nahid Islam today highlighted the aspirations of the young generation to establish a merit-based and professional bureaucracy in Bangladesh. He addressed the 77th basic training program for BCS cadre officials at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre in Savar, emphasizing the importance of moving away from politically motivated promotions within the bureaucracy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nahid pointed out the historical misuse of bureaucracy for political purposes in Bangladesh, noting the unfortunate trend of promoting government officials based on political affiliations. He stressed the necessity of institutionalizing the bureaucracy to ensure that promotions are grounded in merit.

Nahid also underscored the need for reforming the performance appraisal system for government officials and employees. He articulated the government’s commitment to laying the groundwork for state reform, mentioning the formation of various reform commissions to facilitate this process.

The adviser stated that future reform initiatives will be based on discussions with political parties and recommendations from these commissions. Reflecting on the July-August Mass Uprising, Nahid acknowledged the role of students in leading movements against fascism, encouraging newly appointed officials to work towards a Bangladesh free from discrimination.

The event was attended by the Rector of the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre, Sayeed Mahbub Khan, and other officials from the center.
