Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized that adopting a federal democratic republic system is essential for the country’s progress. Addressing a special ceremony at Tundikhel on the occasion of Republic Day 2082, PM Oli stated that the republic is not owned by any single party but by the people, representing a governance system ‘of the people, by the people, and for the people.’
According to National News Agency Nepal, PM Oli explained that in this system, citizens have the power to elect their representatives, from the ward level to the Presidency, and hold them accountable. He highlighted the progress in various sectors, such as education, communication, and infrastructure, achieved in the 17 years since the establishment of the republic, surpassing the developments made during 250 years of monarchy.
PM Oli noted that the societal debate is no longer about choosing between autocracy and republic but rather about improving governance. He asserted that issues like poverty, unemployment, and corruption cannot be resolved by seeking authoritarian leadership but require strong, democratically elected leaders. He stressed that the republic has transformed the focus from ruling over people to serving them, a process that continues.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of good governance, transparency, and accountability as the pillars of the republican system, expressing his commitment to achieving the national aspiration of ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.’ He reminded the audience that the republic was not handed down but earned through the sacrifices of many, with over 36,057 representatives from diverse backgrounds elected by the people.
Reflecting on the progress, PM Oli questioned the status of development indicators before and after the republic’s establishment, highlighting improvements in the Human Development Index, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and living standards. He credited these achievements to the democratic republic system.
Concluding his address, PM Oli remarked on the significance of Republic Day, commemorating the historic date when Nepal became a democratic republic. He urged the people to remember this milestone and the collective efforts to dismantle the autocratic system for a people-centered governance system.
