Kathmandu: The social media platform, ‘TikTok’, has been officially registered at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. This registration aligns with the provisions of Section 3 (1) of the Guidelines for Regulation of the Use of Social Media – 2080 BS, which mandates that individuals, companies, or organizations wishing to operate a social media platform must register with the Ministry.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the decision to register TikTok was made during a Council of Ministers meeting on October 24. Mamata Bastola, information officer and under secretary at the ministry, explained that there was a delay in the registration process due to the Dashain and Tihar festivals. However, TikTok was duly listed with the ministry on Tuesday.
The ministry has issued a statement urging all social networking sites operating in Nepal to comply with the Guidelines and register. Following this directive, ‘Viber’ and ‘We Talk’ have also completed their registration with the ministry.
Under Secretary Bastola further mentioned that other social networks are in the process of being enlisted.
