Dhaka: Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) today emphasized the importance of installing fire extinguishers in every household to enhance fire safety awareness across the country. Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat after inaugurating a fire drill at the home ministry, he reiterated the necessity of having fire extinguishers readily available in both homes and establishments.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Lt. Gen. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury highlighted that fire extinguishers can be easily used by anyone to control flames before they spread and fire engines arrive. He announced that fire drills would begin with the home ministry, followed by similar exercises in other ministry buildings, aiming to prevent incidents like the recent fire at the secretariat.
The adviser also mentioned ongoing efforts to raise fire safety awareness among secretariat staff and citizens nationwide. Senior Secretary of the home ministry, Nasimul Ghani, who leads the committee probing the secretariat fire, confirmed that the drills are conducted based on their recommendations as part of short-term safety measures.
In response to inquiries, it was noted that the probe report on the secretariat fire’s cause, which involves samples sent abroad, has not yet been received.
