Neighboring Country Profits from Bangladesh’s Health Sector Collapse: Dr. Farhad Halim

Rangpur: Chief Adviser of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) and member of the BNP chairperson’s advisory council, Professor Dr. Farhad Halim Doner, has asserted that a neighboring country benefits significantly when Bangladesh’s health sector fails.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Halim revealed that the neighboring country earns approximately 10 billion dollars annually due to Bangladesh’s weak health sector. He accused the current “fascist regime” of deliberately undermining the health sector through systemic corruption, involving a so-called master plan.

Professor Halim made these remarks while speaking to journalists before the DAB’s Rangpur divisional organizational rally at the Shaheed Rafiqul Islam Auditorium of Rangpur Medical College. He lamented that even though there was corruption during the previous regime, the health sector saw no tangible improvements, remaining stagnant since the BNP’s governance ended in 2006.

Highlighting the deterioration, he cited the example of the National Cancer Hospital, where four cancer treatment machines procured during the BNP tenure are now defunct. He emphasized that similar issues plague the Rangpur Medical Hospital and other facilities nationwide, crippling cancer treatment services in both public and private sectors.

In response to the crisis, Professor Halim mentioned that DAB and BNP have proposed comprehensive health sector reforms to the interim government, inspired by England’s National Health System. He expressed optimism that with a like-minded party in power, the BNP’s 31-point plan, including health sector revitalization, would transform the sector into a prosperous one.

The event, presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kenan, saw attendance from DAB and BNP leadership, including DAB Central President Professor Dr. Harun Al Rashid and Secretary General Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Salam. The rally was inaugurated by Professor Halim with a ceremonial release of festoons and balloons.
