Sirajdikhan: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today emphasized the importance of improving the quality of education. He highlighted that while education has expanded over the years, the improvement in quality has not kept pace. “It is not enough to promote students by simply increasing their marks; the merit of the students should be properly reflected in the evaluation. There should be no compromise on the quality of education,” he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jahangir made these remarks while addressing the 133rd annual sports competition and award distribution ceremony at Ichhapura Government Model High School as the chief guest. He expressed concerns over education becoming a commercial enterprise and noted that teachers, along with others in society, hold responsibility for this development.
The Home Adviser also urged students to lead a united social movement against corruption, labeling it as one of Bangladesh’s principal challenges. “If corruption can be controlled, the country will move forward,” he remarked. Additionally, he identified the spread of illegal drugs as a significant issue, stressing the need for a social movement to combat youth addiction.
Highlighting various development projects in Munshiganj, Jahangir mentioned that approximately Tk 700 crore has been allocated for enhancing roads and infrastructure in the district. He also announced plans for establishing a medical college in Munshiganj, with efforts underway to identify a suitable location.
The event was presided over by Md. Jamal Hossain Miah, Acting Principal of Ichhapura Government Model High School. Other notable speakers included Munshiganj District Police Superintendent Shamsul Alam Sarkar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ataul Gani Osmani, and prominent social worker and International Farakka Committee Chairman Tipu Sultan, among others.
