Chitwan: The Gurung community is celebrating the ‘Mey Thalen Priba’ (or Archery) festival today. The festival is observed annually on Phagu Poornima to commemorate the day when the Gurung community gained knowledge of using the bow and arrow, a traditional weapon significant for their protection and hunting in ancient times.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the festival also features other traditional practices such as the use of spears, javelin throwing, and wrestling. These activities are integral to the celebration and highlight the community’s rich cultural heritage.
As per legends, the ‘Mey Thalen Priba’ festival marks the day when the Gurungs successfully tested the bow and arrow, gifted by the Mahaguru of the Gurungs. Bikram Gurung, president of Tamu Pye Lhu Sangh, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Gurung religious and cultural customs, emphasizes the significance of this day in the community’s history.
