Kathmandu: The 7th International Judo Championship is set to be jointly organized under the aegis of the Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS) and the National Judo Association, with the tournament beginning on Thursday. A press conference held today shared that the event will see participation from a total of 250 athletes representing district clubs from Nepal, Bhutan, and Thailand.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Association President Dharma Kumar Shrestha announced that under-21 players will compete in 12 men’s and 11 women’s events. The final matches of 11 tournaments are scheduled for April 17, while the remaining 12 tournaments will conclude on April 18.
The championship will also feature the first para judo competition, organized in collaboration with NECOS, the National Judo Association, and the Nepal Deaf and Blind Para Judo Association. Competitions will include the men’s under-60 kg category and the women’s under-52 kg category.
Shrestha further stated that the competition will serve as a selection ground for athletes to participate in the Deaf Olympics, which are scheduled to be held in Japan in November. The two-day tournament’s matches will be hosted at the Multipurpose Martial Arts Centre in Khusibu, Kathmandu.
Austria’s Sabrina Filzmoser, a seasoned judoka who has competed in four Olympics from 2008 to 2020 and earned two bronze medals at the World Judo Championships, was present at the press conference to lend her support to the event.
