Kathmandu: Chairman of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), Chandra Prasad Dhakal, has emphasized the importance of promoting the registration of intellectual property (IP) and highlighted the crucial role of the State in this endeavor.
According to National News Agency Nepal, during a programme organized by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply; Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, and the Copyrights Registrar’s Office in the federal capital, Chairman Dhakal addressed the challenges posed by a lack of knowledge on IP rights and the need for their protection. He pointed out that issues related to trademarks can often be controversial, urging timely resolution of such thorny matters.
Dhakal underscored that quick hearings of complaints regarding trademarks and patents could help intensify business activities. He also noted that while intellectual property rights are protected by law in Nepal, ensuring the safeguarding of patents, copyrights, and trademarks, public awareness programs are essential for promoting understanding of intellectual property.
Furthermore, Dhakal emphasized the need for singers and songwriters to be vigilant in protecting their property rights, particularly as music has evolved into a significant industry. The event was part of the World IP Day celebrations, first announced by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2001. This year, the theme is ‘IP and music: Feel the beat of IP’.
