Kathmandu: General Secretary of CPN UML, Shankar Pokharel, has asserted that the UML has become a defining political power by embracing the principles of people’s multi-party democracy. He made these remarks at a function held at the party headquarters to commemorate Madan-Ashrit Memorial Day.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Pokharel highlighted the pivotal role played by the UML since the development of the people’s multi-party democracy (PMD) under the leadership of the late General Secretary Madan Bhandari. The PMD laid the groundwork for the party’s emergence as a strong political entity in the general election of 2051 BS.
Pokharel noted that the UML has been instrumental in shaping national politics, with PMD playing a significant role in defeating reactionary and violent policies, as well as the autocratic monarchy. He also spoke about the party’s resilience through a series of challenges, including a ban, a split in 2054 BS, disappointing constituent assembly results, and a subsequent revival.
The event also paid tribute to the late General Secretary Bhandari and the then chief of UML’s organization department, Jivraj Ashrit, who lost their lives in the Dashdhunga jeep accident on Jestha 3, 2050 BS, while traveling from Pokhara to Chitwan.
