Amendment of Constitution Should Begin Immediately, Says Nepali Congress General Secretary

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has emphasized the urgent need for the government to commence the process of amending the constitution. Speaking at the Nepali Congress, Banke Regional Conference, Thapa highlighted the necessity of fulfilling the commitments outlined in the seven-point agreement between the ruling Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Thapa pointed out the importance of establishing a political system that allows for a single party to secure a majority. He criticized the current electoral framework that fosters coalition governments, arguing that it has been detrimental to the nation. Thapa asserted that a constitutional amendment is crucial to ensure a stable government tenure lasting five years.

Thapa also mentioned the need to reassess the roles of Vice President and Deputy Speaker at the Federal level, as well as the provinces. He suggested that reducing the number of ministers to 10-15 at the Federal level and 3-5 in the provinces could significantly cut down administrative expenses.

He reaffirmed the Nepali Congress’s commitment to a federal democratic republic and warned against exploiting public dissatisfaction to incite unrest in the country.
