Kathmandu: Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire has highlighted the unparalleled role played by former lawmakers in establishing democracy, constitution drafting, and the development of the parliamentary system in Nepal. In his remarks at a program commemorating the 26th establishment day of the Ex-Lawmakers’ Forum Nepal at the federal parliament on Thursday, Speaker Ghimire recognized the contributions of these individuals in the political transformation of the nation.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Speaker Ghimire underscored the indispensable contributions of former lawmakers to national life, noting that their efforts are beyond assessment. He expressed concern over reports that former lawmakers are deprived of basic services such as healthcare, and he mentioned that the parliament is working to improve their access to health services. He extended his wishes for good health and wellbeing to the former parliamentarians.
During the event, Deputy Speaker Indira Ranamagar emphasized the necessity of formulating clear policies to ensure special protection for former parliamentarians, including provisions for healthcare, residence, and social security. Several former parliamentarians were honored at the program in recognition of their contributions.
Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly, Bimala Ghimire, called for the implementation of safety schemes for former lawmakers, acknowledging their significant roles in political transformation, democratic movements, and constitution drafting. Former Speaker Taranath Ranabhat, former chairman of the Forum Omkar Prasad Shrestha, vice chairman Govinda Bahadur Shah, and Ghanendra Basnet, among others, noted that honoring former lawmakers is equivalent to honoring the people and the country.
The Forum, an association of former lawmakers, has been advocating for their rights for the past 26 years in Nepal.
