Embossed Number Plates Crucial for Advancing Digital Nepal, Says Transport Minister

Kathmandu: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal, has advocated for the installation of embossed number plates on vehicles as a step towards achieving a digital Nepal. Responding to concerns raised during the zero and special hour in the House of Representatives, Dahal emphasized the necessity of implementing embossed number plates, highlighting that the contract for this initiative had already been signed.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Dahal addressed the history of contract signings, noting that previous agreements had been made three times under different administrations. He clarified that the current government did not initiate these contracts but now faces the obligation to disburse Rs 3 billion to the contractor if the plates are not installed. He further explained the urgency of proceeding with the installation to avoid financial losses without tangible outcomes.

Dahal reassured the public that the embossed number plates would not pose any issues related to the use of the English language. He informed the House that the Ministry has already printed 635,545 plates for various types of vehicles, with 87,989 plates already installed. This move is part of the government’s broader initiative to digitize national services, which includes advancements in passport issuance, national identification cards, driving licenses, and land registration.

The Minister highlighted the importance of transitioning the transportation sector to digital, stating that embossed number plates would provide clear vehicle details nationwide. This digital transition is expected to help deter vehicle theft and tax evasion, as well as aid in cross-border vehicle movement. Dahal concluded by noting that guidelines for the installation of these plates have been issued, underscoring the government’s commitment to this digital transformation.
