Kathmandu: Chairman of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has stated that climate change is a severe challenge facing the country. He emphasized that unity among working people is the only measure to seek solutions to this common challenge.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Dahal made these remarks during an interaction organized by the Forest, Environment and Climate Department of his party on the topic of ‘environment, climate change and management’. He argued that the impact of climate change is the result of an unsuccessful model of capitalist development. He warned that humanity is facing an existential crisis due to climate change, which could worsen if not addressed wisely.
Dahal, who is also a former Prime Minister, recalled Nepal’s presence in international forums related to climate change and the advocacy made for climate justice. He highlighted that Nepal, as a representative of poor countries, has been raising this issue actively in international events.
Dahal pointed out that rich and industrialized countries are responsible for carbon emissions that harm the planet’s environmental health, leaving poor countries vulnerable. He stressed the importance of continuing to demand compensation for Nepal, whose emissions are negligible.
Furthermore, he remarked that while the concept of community forest management had good intentions, it later suffered from bad governance. He praised a concept note prepared by the party department on this pressing issue, expressing his belief that it would contribute to national dialogues and help create international pressure.
The event was attended by department in-charge Shakti Bahadur Basnet, subject experts, and other leaders.
