Sushila Karki Set to Form Mini Cabinet Following Historic Appointment

Kathmandu: After the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Sushila Karki, she is expected to form a mini Cabinet initially and later expand it based on government priorities and on the recommendation of the same Cabinet. The appointment of the new Prime Minister followed strong demands from Gen-Z demonstrators.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the country witnessed significant loss of life and property during the two-day Gen Z demonstrations, which were held to demand good governance, youth leadership opportunities, and the removal of restrictions on access to social media and in the subsequent incidents. In response to the unrest, former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his position.

The Nepali Army assumed responsibility for restoring law and order starting the night of September 9. It worked in coordination with the demonstrators and the President to help bring the situation under control. The Army has been credited with cooperating with the President for safely guiding the nation out of a highly critical situation in a remarkably short time.

Karki, who holds the distinction of being Nepal’s first female Chief Justice, has now become the country’s first female Prime Minister. Known for her clear views, firm stand, and integrity in judiciary, she is widely expected to conduct free and fair elections within the stipulated time frame and to hand over leadership to a newly elected government.
