Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has convened a meeting with key stakeholders to address issues concerning financial cooperative victims.
According to National News Agency Nepal, PM Karki met with officials including Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Anil Sinha, Ministry’s Secretary Kedar Nath Sharma, Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office Raj Kumar Shrestha, the Chair of the Problematic Cooperatives Management Committee, and representatives from the Cooperatives Regulations Authority and victim depositors of cooperative organizations.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that those who perpetuated the cooperative scam should face consequences. She remarked, “The frauds cannot be freed. Rather we make amendments to the laws if that is deemed necessary. Let’s do whatever is required but let’s not spare the frauds. Let’s end the trend of traumatizing the victims.”
PM Karki underscored the urgency of the issue by stating that the government must act swiftly and decisively. She pointed out that the primary responsibilities of the government include organizing elections and addressing corruption and cooperative organization issues. “We came to the government for the same (responsibilities),” she added.
The Prime Minister also suggested that measures such as auctioning the properties of the fraudsters should be considered to ensure that victims’ deposits are returned.
