Yamapanchak Begins with Yamdipdam Signifying the Start of Tihar Festival

Kathmandu: This year’s Tihar festival, the second largest festival among Nepali Hindus, has commenced from today following the Yamdipdam ceremony this evening, which is observed on the night of the Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. After Yamdipdam, homes, business establishments, and other places are adorned with Deepawali celebrations from this evening itself.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Tihar is marked by decorating homes with colorful lights, flowers, and oil-fed lamps. The festival is also celebrated by indulging in various delicacies, notably sweets and sel roti. A significant part of this festival of lights includes playing of deusi bhailo and worshipping different animals and birds.

The festival begins with Yamdipdam, followed by the worship of the crow on Sunday, the second day of Tihar. Prof Dr. Devmani Bhattarai noted that there will be no activities on Tuesday, the fourth day of the festival. On Monday evening, Laxmi Pooja will be performed, while cows will be worshipped on Wednesday, the fifth day of the Tihar festival. The same day will also see the performance of Govardhan Pooja and Bali Pooja.

Tihar is also a festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, which is honored through Bhai Tika. During Bhai Tika, sisters put Tika on their brothers, wishing for their longevity and prosperity, while brothers reciprocate with gifts and a pledge to care for their sisters. This year’s festival will conclude on Thursday with the celebration of Bhai Tika.
