Kathmandu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called upon all citizens, including government officials, political parties, campaigners, and the general public, to refrain from making public speeches that could potentially threaten peace and security.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the NHRC issued a press statement through its spokesperson, Dr. Tikaram Pokhrel, emphasizing the importance of cautious expression, particularly when it pertains to national security and peace. Dr. Pokhrel highlighted the balance between free speech and security, asserting, “Arresting anyone merely for expressing views is against human rights. So, the government must be serious towards protection and promotion of human rights.”
The NHRC has been actively monitoring the case of campaigner Durga Prasain, who was arrested from his residence in Sanothimi, Bhaktapur, in the early hours and is currently detained at the District Police Range in Kathmandu. The commission has gathered information from the Kathmandu District Police Range, Bhadrakali, as well as from Prasain and related police officials.
Initial reports suggest that Prasain’s arrest was related to an investigation concerning public security, and he was provided with a detainee chit. The NHRC assured that Prasain’s health remains normal.
