Bhaktapur: Chairman of the CPN UML, KP Sharma Oli, has lashed out at the government in his inaugural address at the party’s 11th National Congress that kicked off in Bhaktapur today. He criticized the government for not adequately working to create an atmosphere conducive to the upcoming election. “Only talks but no homework is done for election despite fixing the date for voting,” Chairman Oli stated, demanding transparency in government decisions and permission for the free mobility of political leaders to carry out party activities.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Oli emphasized that a fear-free atmosphere, with the return of looted weapons and escaped inmates, is prerequisite to the election. He criticized the government for fueling hatred, conducting media trials, and deterring dialogue. “Cases rather than discussions are forwarded,” Oli, who is also the former prime minister, said, condemning prohibitory orders against leaders. “Threats, coercion, and revenge are detrimental to election and system,” he reiterated.
The Chairman noted that it is clear people aspire to a free and fair election, and the party also supports it. However, he expressed concern over threats instead of healthy competition. Despite this, Oli affirmed that his party does not shy away from elections. He sought cooperation from other parties to reinstate the dissolved House of Representatives (HoR), arguing that no atmosphere has been made for holding elections.
Oli addressed the youth, pointing out that some sections cast aspersions on UML and established parties, claiming they are against Gen Z. He dismissed these claims as incorrect and emphasized that UML had countered every misleading blame with facts.
Furthermore, Oli criticized the recent agreement the government signed with Gen Z groups, labeling it a conspiracy to unsettle the system. “The September 8-9 demonstration was not a mere aggression of frustrated youths, but also the ill efforts against constitution and system,” he asserted.
