Kathmandu: Chief Justice (CJ) Prakashman Singh Raut has emphasized that the Judicial Council serves as more than just an institution for appointing judges; it is a constitutional body integral to shaping the character of the judiciary. Speaking at a program organized to celebrate Judicial Council Day 2082, CJ Raut highlighted the Council’s pivotal role in molding the judiciary’s character.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Chief Justice described the Council as a constitutional patron that sets the standards for judicial qualifications. He noted that every decision made by the Council not only reflects on individuals or organizations but also significantly impacts public trust towards the judiciary. CJ Raut underscored the importance of positive support from all stakeholders to enhance the Council’s effectiveness, suggesting that a free, impartial, and efficient judiciary, as envisioned by the constitution, is achievable through the collective efforts of all involved parties.
During the event, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anil Kumar Sinha stressed the need for institutional strengthening to maintain judicial independence and boost the judiciary’s morale. Senior Justice of the Supreme Court, Sapana Pradhan Malla, encouraged justices to work with fairness, fearlessness, and efficiency.
Attorney General Sabita Baral also spoke at the event, advocating for a focus on delivering responsive and people-centric justice. In addition, President of the Nepal Bar Association, Prof Dr. Bijay Prasad Mishra, argued that the House of Representatives should be restored if elections are not held on time, to ensure the country remains on the constitutional path.
