Freight train completes test run via Padma Bridge rail link

Bangladesh Railway (BR) today successfully completed a test run of its freight train between Bhanga and Mawa station via the Padma Bridge.

The goods train left Faridpur’s Bhanga station at 7:40am and ended its journey at Mawa end, said Project Director of Faridpur Rail Project Brigadier General Syed Ahmed.

Later, the train again backed to Bhanga station, he added.

President of Faridpur Chamber of Commerce Nazrul Islam hoped that once the train service is available to the people, then goods will be transported at a lower cost utilizing the service.

Earlier, the test run of a passenger train from Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station to Faridpur’s Bhanga Station was successfully completed on September 7.

Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan on that day said train services on the Dhaka-Bhanga route will be inaugurated on October 10.

“We’ll inaugurate train service on the Dhaka-Bhanga route on October 10. The commercial operation on the route will be kicked off within a short time,” he told a press briefing at Bhanga Railway Station after reaching there on a train operated on a trial basis on the Dhaka-Bhanga route through Padma Bridge.

On September 7, the train started its journey from Kamalapur Railway Station at 10:07 am and reached Bhanga at 12:17 pm crossing the largest Padma Bridge via Mawa station.

“The project will be completed within June, 2024. We have already completed 99 percent of the work from Mawa to Bhanga route. The construction work of the rail route is going on rapidly,” the minister added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to inaugurate the rail link on October 10.
