Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced that efforts to control activities spreading politics of hatred, undermining social norms, and creating familial mistrust will be intensified. In his address at the international conference on digital crime organized by the Office of the Attorney General, PM Oli emphasized the importance of digital technology for human prosperity and happiness, while also highlighting the necessity for legal frameworks to curb societal indecency under the guise of exercising rights.
According to National News Agency Nepal, PM Oli assured that while the government aims to regulate digital misuse, it has no intention to restrict the right to use social media. He noted that necessary constitutional amendments would be considered after a decade of its implementation. Emphasizing international collaboration in the digital era, PM Oli remarked that crime control is a global challenge and cannot be effectively managed by a single country alone. He advocated for the use of electronic technology in crime investigation to enhance international cooperation.
PM Oli pointed out the challenges faced by civilized societies due to the misuse of science and technology, which, while facilitating comfortable living, also aid in criminal activities. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that all citizens benefit from democratic facilities. The Prime Minister recognized both the positive and negative impacts of 20th-century technological advancements, stressing the need for organized efforts to leverage AI and digital technology for crime prevention and objective investigations.
Highlighting the dual use of digital technology for both beneficial and criminal purposes, PM Oli expressed optimism that conferences like the one he inaugurated would be instrumental in curbing crime and ensuring justice. He linked good governance and the realization of social and economic rights to the broader national goal of ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali’, cautioning against the misuse of these rights.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the current development levels, advocating for orderly progress to empower citizens with their organic and basic rights, aspiring for a total democracy that fosters human happiness and accessible resources. PM Oli pledged to advance the country from its current state of backwardness.
Attorney General Ramesh Badal highlighted the increasing digital misuse in criminal cases, pointing to challenges posed by social media misuse, digital fraud, financial crimes, and data security. The conference also saw participation from PM’s Principal Political Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Supreme Court’s Senior-most Judge Sapana Pradhan Malla, CIAA Chief Commissioner Prem Kumar Rai, and General Counsel of International Association of Prosecutors Shenaz Muzaffer, among other officials.
