Janakpur: An association dedicated to supporting intellectually disabled individuals, Susta Manasthiti Abhivabak Sang, is currently facing a budget crisis that is hindering its operations.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Association of Guardians, which has been addressing the needs of intellectually disabled individuals for 34 years, is struggling with a financial shortfall. This has made it challenging for the association to compensate teachers, instructors, and volunteers adequately.
The association currently manages a center that accommodates 72 children requiring specialized care for their intellectual disabilities. These children receive instruction and training aimed at modifying their behavior and receive focused attention to enhance their health and habits.
Association Chairman Kameshwor Jha highlighted the financial difficulties, noting that the organization is unable to manage transportation for the children from their homes to the center due to budget limitations. Previously, the association operated three rickshaws for transport, but now only one remains, with additional vehicles needed for efficient transportation management.
Jha further explained that the center provides daily education, health care, physiotherapy, and speech therapy for the children. However, financial constraints are threatening the continuation of these essential services. Although the Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan City allocates Rs 600,000 annually to the institution, this amount is inadequate to cover the salaries of teachers and employees. Currently, the center employs five regular staff, including teachers and instructors.
To operate the center effectively, Jha stated that an annual budget of Rs 250 million is necessary.
