KATHMANDU: The Church Boys United Club has emerged victorious in the 11th Falgunanand Gold Cup Football Tournament, overcoming Machhindra Football Club in a dramatic tiebreaker. The final match, held at Phidim Secondary School’s playground in the Panchthar district, concluded with Church Boys securing a 5-4 win in the penalty shootout.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the match ended in a 2-2 draw during regular play, necessitating the tiebreaker to determine the winner. Church Boys United’s Ekraj Budhathoki, Rohan Karki, a foreign player, Chhiring Lama, and Sujan Dangol successfully netted their penalty kicks. For Machhindra Football Club, Devendra Tamang, Sanish Shrestha, Saurav Subba, and Samiraj Thokar found the back of the net during the shootout.
The victory earned Church Boys United a prize of Rs 1,000,555, along with a trophy, medals, and certificates. Machhindra Football Club, as the tournament’s runner-up, received Rs 500,555. The tournament, held annually, showcases competitive football talent and continues to be a significant event in the local sports calendar.
