Communication Ministry Hosts Orientation to Enhance Journalistic Skills

Kathmandu: The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology recently organized a day-long capacity enhancement training session for journalists. Inaugurated by Officiating Secretary Gajendra Kumar Thakur, the training aimed to equip journalists with updated skills and knowledge on the latest journalistic practices and trends.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the session, coordinated by the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), was attended by approximately 40 journalists from various state-owned media. Thakur emphasized the Ministry’s priority on enhancing the media’s capacity and outlined the event’s goal to chart a future course of action and sustain the Ministry’s efforts in this direction. He also expressed gratitude towards RSS for their support in organizing the event.

RSS Executive Chairman Dharmendra Jha addressed the gathering, highlighting the decline in investigative reporting and professional journalism within Nepali media. He stated that the orientation was designed to sensitize journalists to the importance of investigative journalism, encouraging media outlets to focus beyond formal events. Jha stressed the necessity of such training programs to keep participants informed about new developments and the need for their continuity.

RSS General Manager Siddharaj Rai expressed optimism that the training would help journalists adopt innovative practices in newsrooms. Meanwhile, Ministry Under-Secretary Mamata Bastola hoped to gather feedback from participants to refine the Ministry’s annual programs targeted at journalists.

The training featured facilitators such as Ministry Officiating Secretary Thakur and senior journalist Rajendra Dahal, founding Chair of the Investigative Journalism Centre. Participants included representatives from RSS, Gorkhapatra Corporation, Radio Nepal, Nepal Television (Public Service Broadcasting Nepal), and the Press Council, among others.
