Dr Wagle’s Journey from Policy to Politics

Kathmandu: Dr Swarnim Wagle, a prominent figure in Nepal’s public policy and economic sectors, has transitioned into active politics in recent years. He recently secured a second victory from Tanahu constituency no 1 in the House of Representatives election, garnering 38,040 votes. This marks an increase from the 34,911 votes he received in the by-election three years ago.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Dr Wagle’s interest in academia began early in his life in the Gorkha district. He pursued higher education abroad, earning a PhD in economics. Throughout his academic career, he conducted significant research on development economics, public policy, and economic reform, gaining international recognition. His professional experience includes work with various international institutions, primarily focusing on development, poverty alleviation, and economic policy during his tenure with UN agencies.

Upon returning to Nepal, Dr Wagle served as Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, where he made substantial contributions to Nepal’s development perspective plan, economic reform, and good governance. His realization of the necessity for implementing policies and reforms through political avenues led him to join the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), marking a shift from technical to political leadership.

In his current role as an elected representative from Tanahu district, Dr Wagle has prioritized development, good governance, employment, and economic reform. During his campaign, he emphasized the need for new ideas and result-oriented politics to drive meaningful change in Nepal. His entry into politics is seen as ‘leadership with policy competence,’ and his expertise in economy and development policy is anticipated to yield significant results in his parliamentary duties.
