Kathmandu: The First National Women Prosecutors’ Conference, 2025, commenced in the federal capital today, marking a significant step toward enhancing the role of women in the legal field. Senior Justice at the Supreme Court, Sapana Pradhan Malla, inaugurated the two-day event organized by the Office of the Attorney General.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Justice Malla highlighted the current representation of women in the prosecutorial sector, noting that women constitute 29.4 percent of the total prosecutors in Nepal. She emphasized the necessity of increasing female presence at decision-making levels and addressing structural challenges to ensure their meaningful participation. Justice Malla encouraged women prosecutors to overcome barriers and enhance their professional skills.
Attorney General Ramesh Badal expressed optimism about the growing number of women attorneys in Nepal. He projected that by 2090 BS, there would be four Deputy Attorney Generals in the country and committed to amending any discriminatory laws gradually.
Conference coordinator Joint Attorney Mina Gurung stated that the conference serves as a historic event to establish the rights of women prosecutors at the national level. She noted that empowering women attorneys will strengthen and lend credibility to the criminal justice system.
The conference, themed ‘Empowerment of Women Attorneys: Strengthening of Criminal Justice System,’ has gathered around 250 women attorneys. The event will feature the presentation of five working papers addressing the current status of female attorneys, strategic plans of the Office of the Attorney General, and the role of government attorneys in technology-assisted offenses.
A key highlight of the conference is a panel discussion on balancing professional responsibilities with daily duties, exploring strategies for promoting gender equality, and ensuring a safe and inclusive work environment. The event aims to transform professional challenges into opportunities for women in the legal sector.
The conference will conclude with the issuance of the “Kathmandu Declaration.” Attendees include 148 women prosecutors, four Deputy Attorneys General, a Supreme Court Justice, the Chairperson of the National Women Commission, and other notable figures from the Nepal Judicial Service and relevant organizations.
