Former Province Minister Chaudhary Undergoes Kidney Transplant for Third Time

Bhaktapur: The Sahid Dharmabhakta National Organ Transplant Centre, located in Bhaktapur, has successfully conducted a kidney transplant on Laxman Kishor Chaudhary, the former minister of Sudurpaschim Province, marking the third such procedure for the patient.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the Centre’s Executive Director, Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha, announced at a news conference on Saturday that this is the first instance in Nepal where a kidney transplant has been performed on an individual for the third time. Dr. Shrestha emphasized that this achievement demonstrates the feasibility of complex kidney transplants in Nepal, despite the associated challenges.

Chaudhary, who underwent the third kidney transplant on August 25, has since been discharged from the hospital. Dr. Shrestha highlighted the rarity of such a procedure worldwide, indicating that the Centre is now equipped to handle complex transplant cases. This successful operation further underscores the Centre’s capability in advanced medical procedures.

The transplant was performed by a team of doctors under Dr. Shrestha’s leadership, who had previously conducted a second kidney transplant on a different individual in 2010. Since its establishment 13 years ago, the Centre has successfully completed kidney transplants on 1,502 patients and liver transplants on 35 patients.
