Genetic Test for Diagnosis of Rheumatic Diseases Launched in Nepal

Kathmandu: For the first time in Nepal, three new tests have been launched to diagnose the genetic causes of rheumatism. The Next Gen Lab Solutions has introduced three types of genetic tests specifically designed to detect various rheumatic diseases.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Naresh Pandey, Managing Director of The Next Gen Lab Solutions, stated that these tests-HLA-DR4, HLA-B51, and HLA-B27-enable early detection of rheumatism, facilitating more effective treatment for patients. Pandey emphasized that early diagnosis through these tests could reduce the duration of medication required for patients.

Previously, specimens needed to be sent abroad for these tests. The ‘HLA-DR4’ test was sent to the USA, while ‘HLA-B51’ and ‘HLA-B27’ were sent to India. The availability of these tests in Nepal eliminates the need for international specimen transfer, streamlining the diagnostic process.

Dr. Sudhir Karmacharya, a rheumatic disease specialist at the Rheumatic Disease Centre, noted that the introduction of these tests in Nepal would make patient treatment more efficient. He highlighted that 28 percent of Nepal’s population suffers from some form of rheumatic disease, yet only 10 percent receive timely treatment.
