Government Committed to Complete Democracy with RTI Promotion


Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced the government’s dedication to establishing a complete democracy by implementing the fundamental rights of citizens, including the Right to Information (RTI). In his address at the 19th National Information Day celebration organized by the National Information Commission, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of access to information for every citizen. However, he noted that the practice of seeking information that requires legal confidentiality or is deemed irrelevant is not encouraged.



According to National News Agency Nepal, the Prime Minister emphasized the collective effort it took to secure democracy and reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. He mentioned the aspiration to build a wide, independent, and disciplined society, with strengthened democracy incorporating the RTI as a tool to achieve this goal. He further stated that while the demand for certain confidential information and information under investigation is unwarranted, the promotion of RTI should be carried out with discipline and dignity.



The Prime Minister also addressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest between the government and the National Information Commission, emphasizing the need for effective management of issues arising during the enforcement of fundamental rights. Additionally, he highlighted the government’s intention to register social networking sites and include them within the tax framework.



During the event, RTI activists, journalists, and employees, including information officers who have contributed to the promotion of RTI, were honored for their efforts.
