Kathmandu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government and all involved parties to maintain robust peace, security, and good governance. It emphasized the necessity of boosting the morale of security personnel.
According to National News Agency RSS, NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel, in a press statement released on Friday, highlighted that the government’s focus should also be on the reconstruction of public properties damaged due to arson and vandalism. Dr. Pokharel stated, “NHRC urges Nepal government to create an atmosphere where no such violent activities as arson and vandalism will repeat,” and called on all stakeholders to support rebuilding efforts.
The NHRC underscored that if the morale of security personnel is not bolstered promptly, peace and security may become even more fragile. While some communities have contributed to rebuilding police posts, it remains crucial to reconstruct security posts and offices swiftly to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
Furthermore, the NHRC reminded the government to address the management of jails and ensure the return of inmates who escaped from prisons and correction centers. It also noted the psychological impact on students due to the demolition of educational institutions, urging a proper and adequate response.
The NHRC has been continuously monitoring the human rights situation since the Gen-Z protest on September 8 and the subsequent violent acts of arson and vandalism on September 9. Although the early stages of the Gen-Z protest were peaceful, incidents escalated into severe clashes with security personnel after midday, resulting in the loss of lives when security forces opened fire on demonstrators, NHRC reported.
Additionally, the NHRC’s monitoring report indicated that the death of protestors on September 8 led to significant damage to public and private properties due to fire and vandalism.
