Kathmandu: An Investigation Commission, led by former Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki, has made a decisive move to request detailed accounts of the losses incurred during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9. This decision was reached during a commission meeting on Thursday, which emphasized the need for comprehensive data from various stakeholders.
According to National News Agency RSS, the commission has specifically called on the Home Ministry to provide detailed reports concerning the damages sustained by the Supreme Court, the Commission of Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), and other governmental entities. Additionally, the commission has invited submissions from the private sector, industries, and individuals, which can be delivered in person to the commission’s office in Babarmahal or sent via email.
Justice Karki noted the absence of expertise in investigating such incidents and in analyzing ballistic evidence. The commission plans to request the government to supply public prosecutors and police to aid in fulfilling its mandate within the stipulated three-month period. Karki emphasized the importance of gathering evidence, including documents or audiovisual materials, to substantiate claims of loss.
The commission, established by a cabinet meeting on September 21, comprises three members: former IGP Bigyan Raj Sharma and law expert Bisheshwor Prasad Bhandari, alongside Karki. The group is tasked with a three-month investigation to assess the substantial loss of lives and properties during the Gen-Z protest. To date, 74 individuals have been reported dead, and efforts to document the property damage continue.
