Dhaka: Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan today emphasized that the current interim government is committed to safeguarding human rights, a stark contrast to the previous Awami League (AL) administration which he accused of undermining these rights.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser highlighted the government’s initiatives aimed at ensuring public freedom and instituting reforms across various sectors such as the police, administration, and judiciary. He stressed that law enforcement agencies must adhere to fundamental human rights principles, and the judiciary must operate effectively.
Adilur made these remarks during a workshop titled “Implementing the law emphasising human rights and the environment in the changing situation of the country,” held at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh. He accused the previous government of involvement in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, asserting that the state apparatus was manipulated to maintain a fascist regime.
He also commended the contributions of students, political activists, and human rights advocates during The July Revolution, which led to the downfall of the Awami League government. The workshop featured speeches from Home Adviser Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd) as the chief guest, and Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul. It was presided over by Senior Home Secretary Nasimul Ghani.
The workshop saw participation from judges of various courts, district magistrates, government lawyers, and members of law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
