Kathmandu: Kanchha Sherpa, known for his role in the first successful Mount Everest climbing team, has passed away at the age of 92.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Sherpa served as a porter in the historic 1953 expedition when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest. During this expedition, Kanchha Sherpa ascended to over eight thousand metres, contributing significantly to the success of the team.
Kanchha Sherpa dedicated two decades to the field of mountaineering. He held the distinction of being the only surviving member of the first successful expedition team on Mount Everest.
The Sherpa family announced that he passed away at his home in Kapan, Kathmandu.
