Lawmakers Call for Reforms in Child Correction Homes and Local Governance

Kathmandu: Lawmakers speaking in the meeting of the National Assembly (NA), the upper house of the Federal Parliament, today, discussed numerous public concerns, notably the necessity to reduce the number of local units in the country.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the lawmakers highlighted urgent issues, such as the conditions in child correction homes and the preparations needed for the forthcoming monsoon season. Krishna Bahadur Rokaya, during the zero hour of the NA session, pointed out that the country only has nine child correction homes, which are currently overwhelmed, leading to management challenges. Rokaya emphasized the absence of such facilities in the Karnali Province and the pressing issues of overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, and lack of educational and counseling resources, urging the government to initiate reform measures.

Additionally, Ghanashyam Rijal stressed the importance of the government being thoroughly prepared for the predicted above-average monsoon rains and their potential consequences. Meanwhile, Puja Chaudhary raised concerns about the presence of ‘fake’ medical professionals in Rautahat, citing a tragic incident where a woman died due to an illegal surgery performed by unqualified individuals. She called for legal actions to address this issue.

Further, Rukmini Koirala proposed a reduction in the number of local levels from the current 753 to 553, aiming for more effective governance. Bishnu Kumari Sapkota also advocated for governmental efforts to promote local products and improve market access for them.

Finally, Shree Krishna Prasad Adhikari and Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma pressed the Home Minister to resign on ethical grounds to facilitate an unbiased investigation into the visit visa scam.
