Kathmandu: Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has emphasized that civil employees must bear a special responsibility to provide public service smoothly and effectively, which is crucial for good governance. In his address to a programme organized on the occasion of the 35th establishment day of the Nepal Civil Employees’ Union, President Deuba argued that civil service requires reforms aligned with the spirit of democratic changes. He stated, “Trade unions can play a vital role in making civil service efficient. The past mistakes should not be repeated.”
According to National News Agency Nepal, Deuba further mentioned that civil servants can be unified under the leadership of the union. He acknowledged the role that well-wisher organizations of the Nepali Congress have played in policymaking. Additionally, he sought creative and constructive suggestions from civil employees to help realize actionable policies and laws. Deuba highlighted that good governance is a major pillar of the democratic system and development, urging trade unions to pay heed to it.
The NC President assured that his party would always support the rights of civil servants. He reminded that honesty and devotion, coupled with professional integrity, earn a trustworthy image in the bureaucracy. During the same event, Acting Chairman of the Union Uttam Kumar Katuwal expressed that the current federal civil service bill could be finalized by addressing its weaknesses. He noted that the Employees’ Union has consistently played a creative role in fostering good governance and delivering public service.
A book titled ‘Karmachari’, published by the Union, was released by President Deuba at the event. Additionally, 42 civil servants, including outgoing Chair Gopal Prasad Pokharel and Under Secretary Dipak Regmi, were honored on this occasion.
