Kathmandu: Nepali Congress lawmaker Krishna Prasad Sitaula emphasized the necessity of amending the constitution without delay during a recent ‘Special Time’ session in the Federal Parliament’s upper house. Sitaula highlighted the importance of reviewing the constitution’s implementation to ensure it serves the people effectively.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Sitaula urged that any flaws in the state’s governance or weaknesses in the constitution should be rectified through amendments. He stressed the need to assess whether the rights guaranteed by the constitution have been realized and called for swift justice for conflict victims, urging political unity to address these issues.
In a related discussion, CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Urmila Aryal advocated for government actions to be more people-oriented. Aryal expressed concern over public dissatisfaction with recent government activities and emphasized the challenge of effectively implementing the constitution, which was crafted to address the rights of all citizens following the 2006/2007 movement.
Aryal criticized political leaders for not fulfilling promises made while assuming power and suggested that the government prioritize the well-being of common people over power dynamics. She called for a further review of the rights enshrined in the constitution.
Additionally, Maya Prasad Sharma urged the government to address the demands of protesting teachers and promote free, compulsory, and universal education. Sharma highlighted the lack of implementation of compulsory basic education and free secondary education rights.
Tulasa Kumari Dahal called for better utilization of remittances sent by foreign workers, advocating for their inclusion in the contribution-based social security fund and emphasizing the need to create domestic employment opportunities through active economic policies, technical education, and development of agriculture and tourism sectors.
Ghanshyam Rijal and Renu Chand demanded a thorough investigation into the Saurya Airlines crash from July last year, highlighting the delay in preparing a report and addressing the concerns of the victims’ families.
Further, Krishna Bahadur Rokaya stressed dialogue with teachers to address their grievances, while Rukmini Koirala opposed the legalization of the sex trade. Lawmakers Bishnu Kumari Sapkota, Bishnu Devi Pudasaini, Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma, Krishna Prasad Adhikari, and Padam Bahadur Pariyar also raised various development and livelihood issues.
